Our host
There is no one better than Don Manuel Velázquez Cabrera to open the door of his house to us and delve into the history of Salinas del Carmen. We owe him the expansion and improvement of the salt mines as we know them today. It was in 1910 when Don Manuel Velázquez Cabrera began work on the then called Hondurilla or La Torre salt flats, to exploit them and get the maximum yield from them.
Before his arrival, the salt flats were practically abandoned. The infrastructure was outdated, since the origin of these salt mines was at the end of the 19th century. XVIII, when there was a struggle between the territorial lord and the supposed owner of this land to carry out the works and be able to begin exploitation.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Shall we travel to 1910?
The new museum will take us back to the time of splendor of the Salinas del Carmen. We will visit the house of Don Manuel Velázquez Cabrera, who was the owner of this exploitation in 1910. In his office he will show us the history of the Canary salt flats in general and of these salt flats in particular. In the study we will learn how salt is obtained and the peculiarities of the Saltadero del Carmen, we will go through the warehouse with the salt workers’ tools and, in the bedroom, we will better understand what the daily life of the salt workers was like with old images…
And the best, for the end: an animation that will immerse you in the history of the salt flats that will leave your hair standing on end! This trip to the past offers an interactive experience thanks to the use of manipulatives and new technologies that combines with the atmosphere of the beginning of the last century.
